Viewing fashion as an artistic medium, Chandler Marten explores what defines the human experience given our present realities. While challenging the traditional rules of fashion design, he seeks to create moments that elicit a questioning of human nature and that foster empathy through expanding one’s perceptions of humanity. His conceptual inspirations stem from studying the commonalities that exist between people and animals as defined by psychological study. Understanding the fundamental processes that guide human behavior reveals both the validity of the individual experience and the collective human narrative. Working mainly with natural fibers, his construction process is driven by materiality, creating forms and silhouettes directed by the properties of fibers.

He began his undergraduate studies with architecture before quickly realizing his desire to work more closely to the human form. Transitioning to studying fashion design and psychology, he began to find purpose within his work. Combining intellectual obsessions with material and structural exploration, Marten synthesizes his non-linear path into an aesthetic that reveals the multiplicity and complexity of individual experience, with the goal to push the industry to address our current volatile times.
